Act Like a Woman, Think Like a Man

One of my good guy friends, that I talk to about everything, told me to read this book. I don't want to Think like a Man. I am a woman. I was raised with my married parents and saw how a woman should be treated and how a woman should treat her man. He explained, I saw AFTER the courtship. I came along AFTER my dad courted and married my mom. I need to learn about the process before and not just by what my parents taught me about how a man should treat me. I need to look at it through more than one view.
So, I am reading this. I read for entertainment and I read to learn/gain information. I am reading this one to learn.
Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Expanded Edition, Steve Harvey.

Rekindling my Own Love Of Reviewing

I started this blog with  the full intentions of reviewing books. As you see, I can admittedly say, I failed at this! However, that doesn't mean I haven't been reading! Trust me,  I still read and I read a LOT.
So, to bring you up to speed on the excellent authors I have discovered over the past year, I will recommend some great series and authors. I have read these books/series and rated them fives. I won't bombard you with them all in one post. That would be too overwhelming, I will however link you to the best and brightest through a series of posts. So stay posted because there's much more to come.

My Favorite Five Star Author Feature: Sa'id Salaam

Sa'id Salaam

Sa'id is one of my absolute favorites if not THEE favorite! Luckily for you, he has some boxed sets you can check out to save some money and have the next book already, for his books are real page turners!
He writes street, he writes street smart, he writes book smart and he is brilliant in how well put together his series are. I usually hate when authors intertwine characters in their series to promote sales of their other book because they usually suck at it! It's blatant, tacky and poorly done.
However, Sa'id blends his characters perfectly and doesn't bombard you with cameos of characters from other series.
I tend to be hard on authors because I write and I am a grammar (and punctuation) Nazi! A lot of them don't utilize the power of editing! Sa'id is NOT one of those authors. His stories are not the cliche versions of the urban story of the drug dealer, the rapper, the girl who hustles, etc.. He takes those tales and put an unusual spin on them. He (through his character development) keeps you laughing, he makes you yell because he pisses you off and in some instances, he makes you aroused!
I suggest reading his series in the order he wrote them. He is awesome at character development! It's a strong suit of his and you fall in love with them all, even the ones you despise!
Here are the links to his books. I suggest checking the publication dates to make sure you're reading them in order. It helps tremendously to start from the top.  It makes story lines easier to follow. Plain and simple!
I have yet to read a novel of his that I have not given 5 stars. I have yet to read a novel of his that was predictable. I was always left with my mouth hanging open waiting rather impatiently for the next book in that series to come out. He's a breath of fresh air to the Urban Fiction community and a pretty nice guy if you ever had the pleasure of interacting with him (I friended him on Facebook and he takes time to thank his fans and get feedback and interact with them often.)!

Single Ladies Episode 1 by Blake Karrington & Chris Booker

I just finished Single Ladies Episode 1 by Karrington, Blake; Booker, Chris on Kindle for Android! http://www.amazon.com/kindleforandroid/

As usual,  Blake Karrington delivers another hit! He has Chris Booker on board for this series and while he's a new author to me, he did an outstanding job on this collaboration as well. I couldn't tell who wrote which parts but their writing styles blended together as smoothly as red wine and Italian food!
I typically don't like how men portray sistahs in urban literature but he gave these ladies a good look.
We are introduced to Tammy, Lisa, Ralphy, Falisha, Lamar and Kim.
Tammy is holding it down on her own with two kids from her high school sweetheart Chris, while he does a bid. She's faced with a low paying job and lots of high bills. Chris can't do much for her behind bars but its not his fault and she knows he was just trying to feed his family when he got arrested. She's trying to be strong but her landlord is on her back; even propositioning her sexually, they cut her welfare because they want her to put Chris on child support and her lights are due to be cut off. She's at her wits end and running out if options.
Lisa is married to Ralphy and currently cheating on him with her recently released from prison high school sweetheart, Dré. While she loves her husband and father of her 4 year old daughter, Naomi, he just can't do her body like Dré can! She knows she is wrong but love and lust are in play, making it hard to break away. On a weekend getaway with her husband, she has Dré in the next cabin over and sneaks out for a rendezvous with him. She makes the mistake of falling asleep and wakes up to the sunrise. How will she explain this to her awaiting husband?
Ralphy loves his wife and daughter more than anything. He works hard, he tries hard and he left behind a life in the streets to become a family man. He throws his all into his family and would do anything for them. Being from the streets were loyalty is everything, he can deal with a lot of things but betrayal is something Lisa knows he cannot. Ralphy doesn't deserve this and Lisa knows it. Is he as naïve as he appears or will he catch on and catch her?
Falisha has beauty and body. She is used to using what she has to get what she wants. And like many others, Lamar wants her! She doesn't take him seriously because they have been friends since high school and she doesn't fell he has deep enough pockets, although he always seems to have money but no job to show for it. But he's serious as ever. One night he propositions her and tells her to name a price. She does and he delivers. She is shocked but he gets her attention finally.
She takes him up on his offer and they spend the night on the town and finish it off with mind blowing sex! Now they just need to see where this road will take them.
Falisha was not exactly single and had her reasons for not wanting to dive in with Lamar so quickly. But she cannot deny her feelings for him have changed and she sees him differently.  Will she blow this chance at something real for something superficial?
Kim is a sexy, single independent paralegal who is Lamar's roommate and long time friend. She is going through a drought and in need of someone to handle things for her sexually. She is focused on school,  work and passing the bar. A relationship is not on her agenda. But is that what she feels or is she pretending?
The tone is set in Episode 1 and draws you into the storyline. You are glued to the pages as you see where their lives are headed. Episode 2 is sure to follow up and answer questions left hanging in the balance of this juicy series! Lil' Miss Molly by Sa'id Salaam

Well, at least I FINALLY know what a Molly is! I was about as naive as Hazel was when I bought his book. I knew it was bad of course, but I don't use drugs so I never knew the extent to which this drug affected people!
Poor Hazel never really stood a chance! The addictive behaviors of her mother AND grandmother were engrained in her, literally, from the womb! She was very sheltered, then she was thrust into the life of the 'hood and the wolves that waited there. And for them, she was perfect prey with her good looks, virginity and naivety.
Hazel was not alone. Her 12 year old brother Calvin was along for the trip into the hood. He was hanging out with the flamboyant neighbor much to his Pastor Grandfather' dismay. He was being exploited and exposed. He was into hair now and a lot of other things most young boys his age thought were girlish. Hazel should have been his protector, but she was too busy looking for her next high to do anything other than exploit and extort him herself to get that high.
It seems as soon as she began to fit into the ghetto life other curve balls would be thrown at her pushing her further into depravity. Her addiction grew as her inhibitions shrunk. She was down to do anything for the next taste of that Molly. From sex with studs her age and 3xs her age, to sex with a dealer, to strip clubs and everything in between; she was absorbed in a life that she really wasn't about in the end! I gave this book five stars because the story line kept the excitement, intrigue and momentum going from start to finish and Sa'id, as usual, did not disappoint!

The King Of The South by Blake Karrington

My Rating: 5 Stars
Blake Karrington has definitely showed up and showed out with this one! Here he introduces us to the handsome, charming and smart, King.
King is all about his family and his business. He of course dabbles in the street business that he grew up in, with his father being the King before he died. But King has his irons in the fire as he builds a legal empire in music promotions.
King is thinking of leaving his street dealing to go legit when an enemy strikes close to home, for seemingly no reason.
With his best friend out of prison, he bides his time and seeks revenge with Kareem's help. He lays low and plots carefully to bring justice for some of his fallen soldiers.
Kareem, having just been released feels he owes it to King and their soldiers to get revenge. Kareem's wife is adamant about him not going back to the streets and gives him an ultimatum to leave the streets, or she will leave him. Kareem wants to be legit as well, but he sees how very hard it is out there when trying to put food on his family's table. His wife only complicates things further by quitting her job and creating more financial strain, He also realizes how hard it is to keep being faithful with so many options out there. King wishes that Kareem treated her better and understands her frustration, but he also notices little changes in her as well. Something isn't quite right and King sees this, especially when she takes an out of town trip without Kareem or their children. King says something but since Kareem is bent on doing his things so since he is not concerned neither is King.
King doesn't need any extra complications in his life. He already has a lazy baby mother who is greedy and doesn't want to do a thing with her life. He is single by choice but soon becomes enamored but a beautiful songstress, Sloan.
Sloan is beautiful, educated, talented and hard working. She is not currently looking to date but when King enters the jewelry store when she works and custom orders something, she can't help but be smitten by him. She was fresh off a break up from her married ex boyfriend and needed something refreshing and real in her life. It couldn't get any realer than King.
But when you are in the position of a King, everybody wants to take your throne. Sloan's ex  has a common enemy with. He is obsessed with Sloan and doesn't know how to let go, despite the fact that he hid is marriage from her, he feels Sloan should forgive him and take him back. So  he plots to get her back by any means necessary. Even if it means destroying King.
Who is the common enemy? What does Sloan's ex have to planned for King? What will happen with Kareem? Will King get the revenge he seeks? Will King remain on his throne? Make sure you get your copy to find out these answers and see how the drama unfolds! Get your copy here:

Kai: A Déjá Novel by Tajana Sutton

I just started Kai: A Deja Novel by Sutton, Tajana on Kindle for Android! http://www.amazon.com/kindleforandroid/
I finally finished this installment in the Déjá series and once again, Ms. Sutton left me impressed and longing for a sequel.
Kai was NOT a favorite of mine before now. He was cocky, arrogant and obnoxious. However, this novel gave me an in depth look at what made him who he is and showed me a softer side of him.
Kai struggles to find a place with his family after discovering Déjá is  really his sister. He sees how suddenly she is so close and has forgiven their father, whose infidelities eventually lead to their mother being killed. But all is not as it seems.
While he's is in turmoil about his family, he is broadsided by baby mama drama. Cassie seems to want to keep his child from him claiming she wants to make it work, but  Cassie played far too many games in the past. Kai is not convinced and keeps her at bay. Coupled with not wanting to jeopardize his relationship with Tamia, the new lady in his life, Kai is in constant turmoil.
When Cassie suddenly disappears, Kai is forced to care for his daughter, Kyla,  full time.  But just as quickly as she disappeared she resurfaces bruised and broken..or is she?
Cassie claims she needs help from her abusive boyfriend and Kai helps her with urging from Tamia. She's homeless and in danger so he agrees to let her stay there.
Things are going smoothly...maybe just a little too smoothly as the days progress. Then Kyla is kidnapped and all hell breaks loose!
Cassie disappears AGAIN and all signs point to her in their daughter's disappearance. And the chase begins.
We go through a whirlwind of emotions, drama and mayhem as Kai fights to get to the bottom of this seemingly random kidnapping.
While this is happening,  Tamia is sleeping with the enemy unaware. Her ex Dior gets free of a ten year sentence on a technicality and comes back for her.
Tamia is In complete turmoil because while she loves Kai she is still in love with Dior. But Dior has ulterior motives that Tamia Is too blinded to see.
It seems everything is going wrong for Kai and Tamia. Dior schemes his way onto the street team put together to find his daughter and Kai is totally unaware of Dior's identity.
Things begin to be revealed and the truth comes to light. Kai is devastated about his daughter missing,  Tamia's betrayal and Cassie's betrayal. Tamia is thrown in the middle of things when Izzy's cousin, whose helping with the investigation, becomes suspicious of Tamia...
Will Kai find his daughter? Will Tamia make the right choice?  Where is Kyla? Where is Cassie? What is Dior's real intention? This novel kept me on the edge of my seat longing for more and engrossed in all the twists and turns that were laced throughout the book! I urge you to get your copy a.s.a.p.!
